Granny Square

It would almost be rude not to include the rather famous Granny Square here on our crochet pattern page. It’s a rather simple pattern. However, the options for this square are endless!

Materials

Yarn, Crochet hook, Scissors, Darning needle.

Abbreviations

ch: Chain
sl st: Slip Stitch
dc: Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet)
From now on, all crochet stitch abbreviations are written in US terminology.

Yarn & Hook

Any type of yarn can be used for this project along with the yarn manufacturers recommendation of hook size. Play around with different textures and fibers, not to mention the possibilities for colour choices and combinations are limitless!

The Pattern



Round 1

Make a magic loop.
ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2* repeat between * and * 2 more times.
sl st into 3rd chain of initial ch 3.
Fasten off and join a new colour.


Round 2

Working out of the chain spaces from the previous round.
ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 1.
*Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1*
Repeat between * and * 2 more times.
Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 2, sl st into 3rd chain of initial ch 3.
Fasten off and join a new colour.


Round 3

Working out of the chain spaces from the previous round.
ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 1. Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 1
*Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1. Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 1*
Repeat between * and * 2 more times.
Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 2, sl st into 3rd chain of initial ch 3.
Fasten off join a new colour.

Working out of the chain spaces from the previous round.
ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc, ch 1. Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 1. Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 1.
*Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1. Into the next ch space: 3dc, ch 1. Into the next ch space: 3 dc, ch1*.
Repeat between * and * 2 more times.
Into the next ch space: 3dc, ch2, sl st into 3rd chain of initial ch3.
Fasten off and sew in ends.
